Trial Membership Option
If you are still not certain about joining after your free trial,
Basingstoke & North Hants IVC offers the facility to take out a
three months Trial Membership.
The fee for the Trial Membership membership is charged at:
- £10.00 for three months membership.
Enquiry and Trial Members are regarded as
"guests" at all club events. This means that
priority may occasionally be given to full club members
and/or differential charges applied to club events. The
Trial Membership carries no voting rights
within the Club and is valid for up to three months from
the date of receipt of a completed and signed trial membership application
form.
Applying to join IVC
During the first three months, prospective members of IVC
are usually expected to attend at least three events. There
are two reasons why we do this. Firstly it gives you the opportunity to attend a variety
of events before having to decide whether or not you would like to join. And just as
importantly it gives us the chance to get to know you a little better.
Once you have decided you wish to join IVC, you will normally need to get
THREE Committee or event organiser signatures on your membership application
form. If you have not previously been, or are not currently, a member
of an IVC you will need to take your membership application form with you to each of your
initial three events and get a member of the committee to sign it for you. This will later
be used to verify that you have attended your three events and to ensure that a committee
member has had the opportunity to meet you on each occasion.
The Membership Application is posted or handed to the
Membership Secretary together with a cheque or cash for the subscription for consideration
at the next Club Committee Meeting. It is very rare for our IVC Committee to
turn down an application for membership from prospective members. However, the
Constitution of our Club does provide Club us with the right to refuse an application
for membership without being required to give a reason for such refusal.
The reason for this approach to deciding on membership is simple: IVC event
organisers open up their events - and, often, their own homes - to all IVC members, many
of whom will be strangers. They obviously wouldn't want to have to worry about the sort of
people that might turn up. Our vetting procedure thus makes sure
that anyone who is admitted to membership of IVC has at least got through four events without
disgracing themselves in a big way.
Subscriptions in IVC
Subscriptions are kept as low as possible in line with
our non-commercial status and are used to cover the cost of producing and mailing your
monthly bulletin as well as advertising and new member recruitment costs. We also make a
small levy payment from each subscription to the Association of IVCs which includes a
premium for our public liability insurance.
In the event that additional funds remain
at the end of the year, the committee may, at their discretion, use some of this money to
provide one or more free activities or events for the benefit of all members.
The current subscription rates for Basingstoke & North Hants IVC are:
|
Trial membership (3 months)
|
£10 GBP
|
|
Single membership (12 months)
|
£35 GBP per year
|
|
Joint membership (12 months)
|
£50 GBP per year (two people at the same address sharing one bulletin)
|
Your subscription entitles you to unrestricted access to all events throughout
the year and a monthly mailing of the events bulletin. Please note that joint membership
entitles you to one bulletin for your address, not one for each person.
In comparison to other commercial
organisations, the IVC offers excellent value for money and more activities per month than
any similar organisation.
IVCs in other areas
Most areas of the country have a local IVC. Some cover just one large town
(like Swindon IVC), and some cover one or more counties (like Herts and Beds IVC).
All IVC Clubs subscribe to the Association of Inter-Varsity Clubs
reciprocal membership agreement.
This allows for members of any IVC to attend the events put on by other IVCs and
covers joint membership and membership transfer arrangements between clubs.
For people living near the borders of two IVCs, dual membership can be a good
idea, as it ensures they get both bulletins. For example, members living near the
Surrey border may find it worthwhile to be members of both Basingstoke and North Hants IVC
and the West Surrey IVC.
If you live in one IVC's area but work in another, you would be welcome to join
both Clubs.
Age policies on joining
The majority of IVC Clubs including Basingstoke & North Hants IVC
do not operate a maximum age policy for membership. However, all prospective
members of IVC must be over the age of 18 at the time of joining due to the
need to comply with licencing laws at events on licenced premises.
Our IVC is always interested in encouraging applications from people
who are natural, active organisers that will make a contribution to the
club programme.
