"The Eyjafjoll eruption of March-May 2010 caught the European aviation industry unawares. It involved a heady brew of science, engineering, politics and frayed tempers. How did science perform? Why didn't we know exactly where the ash was, how dangerous it was and what the volcano was going to do next? It will happen again, we need to be more ready next time."

Professor Geoff Wadge (National Centre for Earth Observation, University of Reading) will be talking about these questions at this month’s Café Scientifique meeting held at the Déjà vu Bar and Eatery (with plenty of comfy sofas)

The evenings normally begin with a talk by the speaker followed by questions from the audience in the second half, with a break for drinks that also gives you the opportunity to meet others interested in the subject.

Everyone is welcome to ask a question or make a comment. You don't need to be a scientist to enjoy the evening - just come with an open and enquiring mind to this month’s Café Scientifique meeting at the Déjà vu Bar and Eatery (61 St. Mary's Butts, Reading, RG1 2LG), starting at 7:30 p.m.

COTSWOLDS CAMPING

Join Lin in the beautiful Cotswolds for a weekend of camping and walking. We will arrive and pitch our tents on the evening of Friday 10th September at a simple and quiet campsite with showers and toilets but no shop. If the weather is good on the Saturday we will head out for a walk of approximately 8-9 miles (or shorter if preferred) after picking up some lunch. Of course if you don't want to join the walk or if the weather is bad then there are other activities in the surrounding area. Saturday evening can be a BBQ or pub meal depending on how we feel, and of course the weather! The Sunday will be another shorter walk or perhaps something more relaxing.

From the campsite there is a pub within walking distance across the fields and more further a field for those who like a longer walk or short drive. All the amenities of the Cotswold village of Northleach are 1 mile from the site.
The campsite is in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds area of “outstanding natural beauty”. There are miles of wonderful walks to be enjoyed in the area and lots of villages and (hilly) lanes to be discovered by walkers and cyclists or for the less energetic by car.

Dates: 10th-12th September
Cost per night: £6 for a basic pitch plus £2.50 per person (adult), £1 per dog. There will be extra costs for food and drink.
Book by: I will book the pitches at the start of August so let me know by the end of July if you'd like to come along. It might still be possible to book individually after this date depending on pitch availability.

This is not exclusively an IVC event so there may be non-members attending. Not suitable for children.

It is time to brush the cobwebs off your dancing shoes and leave your zimmer frames aside and get on down to the home of folk dancing to dance the night away at a Scottish Ceilidh.

So what can you expect; lots of dancing, feeling elated, getting exhausted and having fun. If none of these appeals then do something less energetic tonight. Please bring/wear:

Come and join me at the 42nd Southampton Boat Show ... it's sure to be fun for everyone. The attractions at the Show offer so much to see and do. Explore Europe’s largest purpose built Show marina proudly displaying all types of craft from superyachts to RIBs, catamarans to ocean racers. Investigate science ship Callista with its displays of underwater life or take a look around the other feature boats, adding to the intrigue and variety at the Show.

There's loads of attractions at the show including watersports, marine antiques, Try-a-Boat, historic ships, unrivalled shopping with great end-of-season bargains, brilliant bars, cafés and restaurants, and loads more! You can even have a try at Hydro-zorbing in large inflated balls on the water.

Members of Manchester IVC are going on a trip to the historic capital city of Budapest.

Cocktail Masterclass at Zebrano

The perfect way to celebrate any special occasion Cocktail Making classes are available at both the Zebrano Greek Street and Zebrano Ganton Street venues, Monday to Saturday.

Classes are available between 1pm-5.30pm with a minimum of 8 people.

Each class lasts about an hour and a half; this may differ according to the size of your group.

Your cocktail experience will consist of:

* A champagne reception for all guests
* Make and drink a classic long drink eg: Mojito
* Make and drink a classic martini eg: Cosmopolitan
* Make and drink a shot

To show off your newly required knowledge Zebrano split the group into two/three teams and each team will create their very own cocktail. The winning team will receive a champagne cocktail on Zebrano.

Cocktail Experience = £19

A complimentary area will have been reserved for your group where you can drink all your cocktails, enjoy platters of food and then dance the night away.

After the booking you can choose from having either a selection of platters for the group or you can choose a two course meal:

Cocktail Experience + platters of food = £29

Cocktail Experience + a two course dinner = £39

Bookings need to made 3 weeks in advance, so if you are interested in coming please let me know ASAP, but by 21st of September at the latest.

HAVE A TRY AT GHOST HUNTING "REVISITED" 
Location:   Fort Widley, Portsdown Hill, Portsmouth

Part of "Palmerstone's Follies", Fort Widley was built in 1861 to defend the city of Portsmouth from sea and land attack. A central spiral stair from the parade ground gives access to the four main tunnels running off it radically. It is these underground chambers that most of the Paranormal activity have been reported.

After having an amazing time at this event earlier this year, I've decided to arrange another trip to this event. The evening consists of being split into 2 teams, where you conduct different ghost hunting experiments using various pieces of equipment. Having "chewed off so many ears" talking about what I experienced last time, I want to go back a second time to experience the drama, atmosphere, and paranormal occurances which happen during the evening.

I would like to book the places by 1st September to ensure there are places available, so please get your full payment to me by this date if you want to attend. Any questions or queries give me a call.

PORTSMOUTH IVC - CHOCOLATE WEEKEND IN BOURNEMOUTH

A scrumptious weekend for chocolate lovers (and not just for the women!) A top hotel in bournemouth including breakfast and dinner for two nights, two days of chocolate tuition,learning how to make delicious delicasies with the brown yummy stuff. On arrival we are met with a chocolate fountain for us to start the weekend off with. We also go home with all the goodies we have made over the two days. The price of this is £275.00 which may sound a lot but when broken down is £60 a night for hotel/breakfast, £75 two days tuition, £75 for two three cource meals and all the chocolate we can eat that weekend plus freetime to go out in the evening.
